It has been a full two and a half weeks since my graduation from Rockhurst. I cannot believe that four years before that, I was graduating from my high school in western Kansas. The weekend this time around was that much more full though as I also moved into my new apartment on the Plaza. I was so lucky to have my parents, my siblings, my boyfriend, and my grandma all here to help me throughout the weekend, and there were definitely a few times that I could not have done it without them! <br />

Friday was the Baccalaureate mass at St Francis Xavier, across the street from Rockhurst. Before the mass, all of the graduates gathered on the quad and got a chance to catch up, take pictures, and just take a moment to reflect before the big weekend began. We even got to say hi to Lynn and Dean McConnell who were in the 2nd floor of Conway from below! The church was completely packed with the families who were there to support their graduates, and Fr Curran gave a great homily. <br />
<br />
Saturday was the actual graduation ceremony! By being separated between the colleges, it seemed weird which friends we were able to run into. After getting seated at the Municipal Auditorium, and seeing my family all sitting together, the importance of the day truly set in. I could not believe how excited everyone looked for us. Our class speaker was Quentin Savwoir, who I remember thinking the first time I met him that I hoped he got asked to give our graduation address. Walking across the stage was exciting, but I especially enjoyed all of the smiles and congratulations I was able to share with professors who were also part of the ceremony.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">With friends at Hawk Walk</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The Hawk Walk proceeded from Municipal Auditorium to a Block Party in the Power and Light District. I was part of the first wave of people and directly followed bagpipers (nice touch Rockhurst) from a local group. It was definitely a unique experience to get to walk through downtown Kansas City. After spending some time congratulating friends and hanging out with my family, we went to dinner on the Plaza. <br />
<br />
Over the course of the weekend, my family was phenomenal in also getting all of my stuff moved from one place to the other, and over the course of the following week, I got settled into my new place (although it is still a work in progress). And then last week after Memorial Day, I started my new job! It has been a crazy few weeks but I am so excited to be graduated and on to the next step in my life!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">DSP Seniors with our Chapter Adviser, Turner White</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
<br /></div>
Last week was our "very last" of several different events- Senate meeting, DSP meeting, and Senate Bingo (also Wednesday night class, but that's not as sad). At our last DSP meeting, all of the seniors received graduation cords and roses. At this time, the seniors always give a short speech to talk about their experience at DSP and pass on their "words of wisdom" to the younger students. As I've spent three years watching the previous seniors give these talks, I was very excited to do the same as a senior myself. However, as I began to talk about the professors and the opportunities that Rockhurst had provided me over the past several years, I got choked up. Tears may not have fallen, but it was obvious that I was emotional! It seems that every opportunity I have had in recent years been hugely impacted or made possible by professors being devoted to their students. Having that kind of devotion has been so important to my positive college experience that its hard to believe that students even consider going to the larger schools that have a much larger student-to-faculty ratio. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I recently learned that today is Teacher Appreciation Day (thank you Facebook). So this blog post is a solid THANK YOU to all of the professors in college and the teachers and mentors throughout high school and younger. Its unbelievable to think about how many students some of these teachers have influenced in their careers (many teaching for more than 40 years). From the student aides, staff, and every person who influences students throughout the years, I know that every mentor wishes the best for students and has done so much to positively influence our futures. </div>

width="320" /></a>It seems that this is a common phrase that has been uttered with increasing frequency this semester. Any variation of the phrase really, such as "Almost There", "Just a Few More Weeks" and "Last *fill in the blank* Ever!". These are just simple ways for those of us who are graduating are staying motivated throughout the last few weeks of school. Some seniors are still on the job search, trying to find a good fit for our first "real" job after graduation. Others are looking at starting grad school or moving back home to figure out what they want to do. I have been lucky enough to have settled down a job to start after graduation before the end of March. I've only had to continue my work at school and in my current job with as much enthusiasm as possible in order to keep being productive for a few weeks before I have to start in the "real" world. <br />
<br />
<br />
The biggest piece of this puzzle seemed to be an apartment. I spent several weeks on the apartment hunt, finding a place that would line up with my (probably unreasonable) list of expectations. Downtown or Plaza area, reasonable rent, fitness center, nice management, safe area, washer and dryer preferred, etc and so forth. I had found several properties that I liked but I kept going back to one apartment building in particular. I didn't want to choose an apartment until my mom intended to be in town over Easter to apartment hunt with me. So when a unit came available at this particular place, I impatiently waited the day I could go in to tour with my mom. As soon as I saw the apartment, I knew that I wanted to live there, but I toured others to appease my mom and to be 100% sure. A few hours later, over lunch, I called the property manager and told her that I wanted to come in and fill out the application. She told me that she would save the spot for me and to just come in later that afternoon. When I arrived to fill out paperwork, the apartment manager told me that three other people had toured and wanted to make an offer/ fill out an application, but since I called, she had told them it wasn't available to save it for me! She also told me that she had shown the property 15 times over the past week, with no good fits, so it is obvious to me that it was meant to be for me to live there! I will be able to move in the weekend of graduation, a time when I will also have lots of helpers in town for moving everything. <br />

Overall, it seems that I have found a great fit for a job, an apartment, and I will be able to start my first year after graduation much better than is often expected for college graduates these days: debt free, with a well-paying job and living in my first-choice apartment! I can't wait to see what else will be in store!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08484384862373953040noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2941835301808276751.post-40590701041809887792014-04-20T17:05:00.000-07:002014-04-20T17:05:34.633-07:00Professional VisitsLast Tuesday was <a href="http://www.rockhurst.edu/news/article/2014BizEthicsDay/" target="_blank">Helzberg School of Management's Leadership and Ethics Day</a>. This is the second year that the school has hosted this event, which welcomes leaders in the business community into classes to speak about their experiences in the business world. Generally, these speakers talk about times that their ethics have been tested throughout their experience in business and how their leadership has developed over time. Sometimes these speakers are alumni of Rockhurst whether from the Undergraduate, MBA or EMBA program. <br />

This year, the first class that I attended with a speaker was my International Management class. We had Scott Marshall who worked for Ford for many years both in the United States and in the Czeck Republic and has even worked for a Swiss company in the United States. Throughout his time in these different positions, he talked about how he struggled to learn many lessons. These lessons included everything from knowing a language to inspire trust all the way to how not to transport vehicles across country borders. <br />
<br />
The second speaker in my classes that afternoon came to us by speakerphone from Baltimore, MD. This man, Jeff Goering, is the Chief Financial Officer for the Baltimore Ravens and is an alumni of Rockhurst. His journey to become the CFO was quite varied and it was interesting to see how each step in his career, while it didn't always seem that way, would lead him toward his current job. He spoke about ethical situations in which he had to make decisions on behalf of the stadium and how his education helped support his decision.<br />
<br />
Each time speakers come in to speak on these type of issues, it gives the students the opportunity to hear how our liberal arts education will be applied following graduation. These type of talks, while varied in exact story, can be inspiring for students to keep pushing through in order to finish out the year and continue to work toward the career of their dreams. This Saturday, Delta Sigma Pi (the business fraternity) volunteered with Habitat for Humanity to help them prepare their new ReStore building in Blue Springs. Everyone in the fraternity is required to attend a service event, and this is the second time that we have been able to assist with this particular project. Our chapter of DSP initially got connected to this project through one of our brothers, who is an employee of Habitat for Humanity, and we also got the UMKC chapter involved to have even more volunteers. A local high school debate team also volunteered, so we were able to have a lot of hands on deck!<br />

According to the website, RestoreKC describes themselves as "<span style="font-family: inherit;">...your discount home improvement store! Donate your old items to help raise money for <a href="http://www.habitatkc.org/">Habitat for Humanity Kansas City</a> homes or shop us for great deals on furniture, building materials, lawn & garden or major appliances." While talking to Mike, one of the managers at the site, he spoke to the importance of ReStore locations to allow people's monetary donations to the organization to go directly to their core efforts, that of building homes to people in need. By funding daily operations such as salaries and utilities through the ReStore projects, they are able to supply their own income for the less "appealing" parts of the organization and depend on donor support for their core operations.</span><br />

So here are some pieces that I have found more useful to me than any other advice I have read:<br />
<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>Stay Relaxed: Most of the time, it seems that interviews aren't nearly as stressful as what many people make them out to be. Its better to just be calm and treat the interview as more of a relaxed situation than a stressful one. Interviewers are looking at whether or not they can see working with you and so its important to build a relationship with those potential colleagues. </li>
<li>Take a Deep Breath: (before answering any big questions) I know that oftentimes when I'm in an interview, it can be really difficult to stay calm and I will talk too quickly, making it too difficult for the interviewers to understand what I'm really trying to say. So I've found it best to, after any question is asked, take a deep breath, and intentionally speak a lot slower as I'm answering the question that they have asked so that my point will get across accurately and efficiently. </li>
<li>Know your Resume and the Position: Know what it is that you really want the interviewers to know about you before even going in. That way, you can highlight pieces of your resume that you are qualified and excited about, which makes it a lot easier to convince everyone that you are right for the job. </li>
</ol>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Well good luck in your job search Hawks! I hope that my little pieces of advice that I've shared can be minutely helpful in your next interview during this "interview season" for all those summer internships and final jobs!</div>

Last Thursday night and Friday was Rockhurst's official groundbreaking and a presentation to honor donors for the new academic building, named Arrupe Hall. Thursday nig<span style="font-family: inherit;">ht was the presentation titled "<span style="background-color: white; color: #282828; text-align: center;">Wisdom and Leadership Depicted Through Humor"</span> by Doon</span>esbury creator Garry Trudeau which was intended to honor the McMeel family, donors to the new building. I attended this presentation and greatly enjoyed a chance to hear Mr Trudeau speak. The presentation truly seemed to follow the title of the presentation, beginning with stories of coming into adulthood, moving into the story process ("humans are hardwired to create and process stories") and following with speaking on the topic of comedy ("the opposite of comedy is not seriousness, it is despair"), entertaining us the entire way through. While he questioned his own ability to speak on the topic of wisdom, I found the whole presentation to be captivating. <br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Countdown we made at my high school for graduation</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
My favorite quote from his entire speech though came toward the beginning, and I found myself reflecting on it throughout this week. As Mr Trudeau was speaking on his own coming of age, he spoke of navigating the "uncontrolled skid that is adolescence". As I prepare for my own graduation from college in a mere 8 weeks of classes, I cannot help but reflect on the huge impact the past 4 years of my life will have on me and how quickly it has gone by. It seems like just yesterday I found out that I received a full-tuition scholarship to attend Rockhurst, and now I'm in the final weeks to graduate. Four years ago today I was working on projects for high school Spanish class and beginning a countdown bulletin board for graduation from high school (see above) with many of my closest friends, excited and nervous to take that huge step of moving away from home. I never could have imagined what lie in store for me throughout these past four years, but that only points toward what little I can expect to know for the future.<br />

One issue that I have found very interesting recently
has been involving the recent Ugandan Anti-Homosexuality Act that has been
passed and how it has affected foreign aid to this developing country.
This issue has caused organizations to make a decision regarding their
guidelines for providing aid. Many organizations give aid to this country
due to the low GDP and to assist the nation in its continuing development
efforts. However, many organizations have felt that the enactment of this
new bill does not line up with the values of the organization and have
expressed a desire to withhold aid as a result of the passage of this law. <a href="http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=47169#.UxUEQfldVuo" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">This article</span></a><span class="apple-converted-space"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"> </span>by the UN News Centre sites

The backlash experienced by this issue however, seemed to be <a href="http://uk.reuters.com/article/2014/03/03/uk-uganda-gaybill-author-idUKBREA220P920140303" target="_blank">anticipated by the lawmaker</a> who first proposed the bill. Overall, this bill was widely liked by the citizens of the nation, and the lawmaker believes that these withdraws of support are worth the preservation of the nation's moral values. Whether a person agrees with the new law or does not however, I believe the most important thing to look at is how the average citizen's life will be hurt or made better by the enactment of the law. Nonprofits and aid organizations additionally have to evaluate how their organization's values fall into line with any decision the government has made. These widespread implications make politics and aid interesting topics to dig deeper into and to continue to follow closely. </div>

Thursday night, I was able to attend an Unbound event, featuring Lillian, a woman working in Kenya as the director of the mother's groups for Unbound's Nairobi project. Lillian is an energetic woman with an eye for what really goes on in the sponsored families' homes. She grew up in a family with nine children in Mombasa, Kenya, which allows her to connect her own experiences with others around her. The event enabled people in the community to learn more about Unbound, the micro-lending program through mother's groups, and to socialize.<br />

The most unique part about this group is their micro-lending programs. The women are encouraged to donate just about $1.10 per month to a group "pool", which unbound matches. At any given time, a mother can approach the group to request a loan to start their own business, expand a business, pay for a child's school tuition, or pay for medical expenses. 70% of the loans requested are to support businesses. These businesses may be raising poultry, farming, providing laundry services, or perhaps creating necklace and bracelets through intricate bead work. The loans allow the women to make the investment needed to start these businesses and then make money to support the family. </div>

Lillian shared how important this income is to the family in this way: if a family does not have a steady job, the mother or father might go out in the community to find a job as a daily laborer. If they come home without having found a job, this also means that the family will not have a meal to feed their children. Lillian shared stories of mothers placing a pot on the stove without starting the fire, and then when their children ask "Mom, when is dinner" she simply says, "Its being cooked, just be patient". Eventually the children fall asleep without realizing they didn't have dinner, carrying them over into another day. These tactics are heart-breaking for these mothers and can cause fights for the parents. By allowing the mothers to start their own business, they no longer have to worry about whether or not they can provide a meal for their family, which provides huge ripple effects for everyone in the community. </div>

#5: Fine Arts events</h3>
<div>
<a href="http://www.kauffmancenter.org/wp-content/uploads/MKT.Stage_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.kauffmancenter.org/wp-content/uploads/MKT.Stage_.jpg" height="250" width="320" /></a>Throughout the city, there are also many opportunities to explore the fine arts. From the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, to the UMKC Conservatory, there are countless chances to see an Opera, the Ballet, or a play directed by Kansas City's own. Almost every weekend, I will look over at the <a href="http://www.visitkc.com/" target="_blank">Visit KC</a> website, and there are several plays and various types of performances available to enjoy. While I have only been able to attend a few of these types of performances, there are consistently opportunities for people to see these events across a huge spectrum of costs and locations. From free concerts on the plaza and at colleges to events you pay a much higher price for at the Kauffman Center. </div>
<div>
<h3>
#6: Concerts</h3>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGEFOZLcbbS8S-YoCJ2SEYRQwFponU4RwFg59kkJXkoMaM4Y93fmgSU6JL2OvxqR8jiWfIkn-zP3_LOcuN-1Haz6hV2zLAQfpZe5V_JhmLD6rv1B8r-aWsL3IYFCL-95GFrGn31AKW7l8/s1600/100_4894.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGEFOZLcbbS8S-YoCJ2SEYRQwFponU4RwFg59kkJXkoMaM4Y93fmgSU6JL2OvxqR8jiWfIkn-zP3_LOcuN-1Haz6hV2zLAQfpZe5V_JhmLD6rv1B8r-aWsL3IYFCL-95GFrGn31AKW7l8/s1600/100_4894.JPG" height="150" width="200" /></a></div>
Throughout my time at Rockhurst, I have also attended many concerts. From my very first concert<br />
of Flogging Molly at the <a href="http://www.uptowntheater.com/CONCERTS.html" target="_blank">Uptown Theater</a> in March of my freshman year, to the concert I am seeing this weekend- Infected Mushroom at the <a href="http://www.midlandkc.com/" target="_blank">Midland</a>- a gift to my boyfriend, I have taken advantage of the music scene in Kansas City. There are often many free concerts at the <a href="http://www.powerandlightdistrict.com/index.cfm?page=calendar" target="_blank">Power and Light district</a> such as their line of concerts during the summer on Thursday and Friday nights. (Country on Thursdays and more pop/dance music on Fridays) I saw Silversun Pickups as part of the MLS week, and Icona Pop for these reasons! There are also the fair share of more expensive "big name" concerts at the Sprint Center on a regular basis. </div>
<div>

<div>
Overall, my time living in Kansas City has been full of numerous types of ways to spend my evenings and weekends. People are never left to have nothing to do on weekends in the city- so staying busy is never a problem! </div>

This museum, located less than a mile from the university, allows free entry to see all of the permanent exhibits at all times. With a large lawn with permanent art installations that provide entertainment in addition to the huge collections inside, this museum has entertained me for many afternoons and evenings throughout my time at Rockhurst. Many students will also use the front lawn to host frisbee tournaments, picnics, and general opportunities to meet up with group of people on a nice afternoon. <br />

Over the years, I have been able to attend numerous festivals, fairs, and other events around the city. The Renaissance Festival- while among the most expensive of the events I'll share- was a lot of fun for my family and I. (My parents last visited while my mom was pregnant with me!) Between the costumes of other attendees, jousting tournaments, hundreds of booths for Renaissance themed food and gifts, camel rides, and jesters; the whole day was filled with entertaining activities. </div>

Fiesta Hispana in the downtown area was my first experience with a Spanish-themed festival with booths selling food and items from many different cultures from Latin America, in addition to performances and artists. The Plaza Art Fair (along with the Westport Art Fair, and the Brookside Art Fair, among others) features booths from artists from all around the country in addition to deals offered by restaurants and stores in the area is always a great chance to walk around and soak up the art culture in Kansas City. </div>

The next few weeks, I want to go through many of these that I have been able to take advantage of over the past few years. <br />

<h3>

First Fridays takes place, exactly as stated, from 7-9 pm the first Friday of every month. Countless art showrooms open up their doors to the public to view the art. Additionally, many restaurants in the area (Christopher Elbow Chocolate among them) have special deals at the time of this event for the public. Street artists and performers also make appearances throughout the area making it a whole evening affair that can be incredibly enjoyable for many students, visitors, and residents alike. Over time, my friends and I developed a pattern of visiting favorite showrooms and favorite areas to walk through. We would also plan the event around dinner or an evening watching movie favorites for a great start to the month! <br />

After purchasing a Living Social deal giving me half price tickets, my boyfriend and I spent the large part of the day exploring the museum. It was recently renovated and it including educational videos and interactive exhibits, which brought pieces of the history alive and allowed for a cohesive experience involving the artifacts and the history behind the progression of events throughout the war. There were also several temporary exhibits and a gorgeous view overlooking the city from the top of the Liberty Memorial. The small cost was definitely worth the experience at this museum.<br />

This week is always an enjoyable transition, because it provides a chance to hang out with friends for a while before getting into the full swing of the semester. This semester, I am taking several different classes- two accounting courses, a communication, a management, and a business course each. It will be a full semester with 15 hours and 20 hours a week working. While many students do manage a much busier schedule, I am excited to have a full schedule, yet with time to enjoy my last semester. <br />
<br />
Spring semester also tends to go much more quickly than the fall semester. I think this is a result of two different things. First of all, we lose almost an entire week for actually taking classes. Secondly, I think that with an entire week off in the middle of spring semester, it divides the semester so that both "sections" are fairly short. However, many students also have troubles getting back into the semester after such a long break.<br />
<br />
I recently learned that 40% of our campus is involved in a fraternity or sorority- this huge portion of our campus is especially busy this time of the year as they start to welcome new freshmen as potential new sisters (or brothers as the case may be). This whole new group of students being involved means that there are a huge number of people very involved during this semester.<br />

However, in the last month of classes, I have seen a lot of this first hand. <br />
<br />
First of all, I apologize for the very late blog post. Shortly after my last post, my maternal grandfather passed away. This fairly sudden loss in my family, shortly before the end of the semester, provided a lot of stress in my entire family's life. This difficult time also coincided with finals week for my siblings and I, which meant many projects and papers due at the same time. The professors however, were so incredibly supportive, and allowed me to complete a few of the projects on my own timeline. Other staff members offered their condolences and students texted me to offer their support while I went back home to be with my family for the funeral. I have been so incredibly grateful for all of their kind words and their kind support. <br />
<br />
Winter break has been (as I'm sure for many students) going by much more quickly than I may have hoped. While many have taken the chance to work or travel, I have enjoyed most of the break back in western Kansas. I know that if everything goes according to plan, I won't be able to take 2 weeks or more off in order to just relax between stressful times, so I'm very happy to take this time off! So I will share a few pictures from the break! <br />

However, the soccer (European futbol) team have had an incredible record over the past many years. With one of the top "winning-nest" coaches (also great accounting professor, Anthony Tocco), and a supportive program with other talented coaches. The team hosted the regional games last weekend, and after winning those- progressed onto the NCAA Division II Final Four games today in Georgia. While the team did not win these games, this was an incredible opportunity for the team, and we are proud that they were able to represent the university in such a great way, and do so well to progress this far. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Otherwise, this week has also welcomed many visitors- several food vendors have come to campus as the current food service provider contract will need to be renewed or a new one decided on by the summer of 2015. This meant that there were different groups of people on campus surveying students and getting a feel for the scope of Food Services on campus. We hope that they will be able to find the right fit for campus, whether it is with our current provider or a different direction! </div>

It seems as though we were just presented with the different options for our capstone groups to work with, so obviously the time has gone by very quickly! On Wednesday, my group will present our final proposal for ways that the National Airline History Museum can make changes to increase their marketing presence and increase visitors to the museum. This presentation will be in the form of an almost hour-long presentation in front of board members, classmates, and professors. We will be talking about our recommendations for the museum, based on our experiences visiting the museum, discussing the issues with our contact, and researching solutions based on what other museums have done in the past also. Some of the best parts about working with the museum was the events that we have attended as a result of being a part of this project. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8ztgDb88vPrTgv65ggPRLZPdi22csDwDriDQUK648C1N4voKHCU_6lw2TiKNHnNtw1qLdz-5XnwWysQ2YyGDa4dZr5KwejD14c_r_iZZLrDFC2hqJoaxI5J1yS2lndex-oMFQSjQprWc/s1600/1235067_10153446251650001_2023374409_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8ztgDb88vPrTgv65ggPRLZPdi22csDwDriDQUK648C1N4voKHCU_6lw2TiKNHnNtw1qLdz-5XnwWysQ2YyGDa4dZr5KwejD14c_r_iZZLrDFC2hqJoaxI5J1yS2lndex-oMFQSjQprWc/s320/1235067_10153446251650001_2023374409_n.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
The first event I attended was the Celebration of Flight in the middle of September. This event included Red Bull Flugtag fliers who did stunts, visiting planes open for tours, and the whole building open for visitors. I attended this event with my boyfriend, who thoroughly enjoyed seeing the Flugtag fliers (in the background of this picture) in addition to other parts of the museum. Attending the event was incredibly useful as we looked at the ways for the museum to continue to benefit from our work. <br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBmH1uS3F4NEbO43EzP9LcyJYA5OgB0KlFASDuDm1ZW-eCPwuN4REyO5mPupCyTC2DBj6jDmJlymP9SednsmU1A5iNy72LG4CCV5TsugsudtzgvOqC0a_yPoh8JwwpFyB6jfd9_8CIgio/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBmH1uS3F4NEbO43EzP9LcyJYA5OgB0KlFASDuDm1ZW-eCPwuN4REyO5mPupCyTC2DBj6jDmJlymP9SednsmU1A5iNy72LG4CCV5TsugsudtzgvOqC0a_yPoh8JwwpFyB6jfd9_8CIgio/s320/photo+1.JPG" width="240" /></a>Later on, in November, I attended the Salute to Veterans event at the museum. This event was a 40s themed evening party that included dinner, silent auction, and dance to benefit the museum. Red, white, and blue adorned the planes, and all of the decorations throughout the museum, which provided the theme for the evening. The evening started with hor d'oeuvres all around the venue, and then I was connected with a few of the board members and ended up enjoying the evening with a few of the board members and their significant others. There were several veterans who had been POWs during World War 2 who attended the event, in addition to countless other veterans from all lines of the service. After many ceremonial pieces specifically addressing the holiday, the visitors sat down to enjoy songs and dinner for the rest of the evening. </div>

These events, among a few other visits to the museum really set off the opportunities that lie in weekend plans in Kansas City. You never know how you might be spending your time when there are so many things out there for people to enjoy! </div>

In addition to Dan Rather last week, the week held a slew of activities for our first ever Leadership Symposium week. The inspiration for this week came from a discussion that executive board members had with our own Father Curran last semester. He questioned why we should not have a week dedicated to leadership, as Rockhurst has continued to enjoy its reputation for leadership throughout time. As a result, Senate worked with several other organizations, including SAA, SAB, SAAC, and the Order of Omega (I might have missed a few, and I apologize if that's the case) Monday, we had a speaker, Tom McDonnell, who is the President and CEO of the Kauffman Foundation. <br />
<br />
Tuesday was an alumni panel sponsored by Order of Omega, and Wednesday was a presentation by the former president of Harvester's and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHpEETlsOu4&feature=share" target="_blank">SAB's Turkey Dinner</a>. At the Turkey Dinner, all of the canned goods collected (admission for the event) were then donated to Harvester's. SAB made an awesome video about the Turkey Dinner, so I definitely recommend watching it! (linked earlier in the paragraph)<br />

Finally on Friday was Res Life's annual Beyond Words event. Each one of these events had wonderful attendance, as students understood the influence of the speakers and the importance of their contributions. This Monday was the second annual Leadership Series event for Rockhurst University. This year, Rockhurst invited legendary journalist Dan Rather to speak to students in a Q&A session and had a luncheon at the downtown Marriot for various community members, staff & faculty from Rockhurst, and some students to attend. Thankfully, I was lucky enough to be able to attend both the Q&A session and the luncheon! I was incredibly impressed by how personable Dan Rather was both while talking to our students and while talking to the large group. While at times speakers held at arms-length can be very difficult to relate to, I overheard one student saying, "I just wanted to ask him if he would be my grandpa!"<br />
<br />

Monday morning, about 20 students gathered in the Finucane Center, along with several faculty and staff- Dan Rather arrived and allowed us to jump right in, asking questions from many different subjects, ranging from the main theme of leadership to reflecting on his experiences. He had many different insights, that were really incredible to hear about. His reflection on leadership was very insightful, including four different main points. These were character, vision, communication, and decisiveness. The most incredible part is that Mr Rather stated that every one of the leaders he interviewed exemplified these characteristics, and how they carried over into leadership positions for everyday situations also. <br />
<br />

Next, we went to the luncheon at the downtown Marriott. At this particular event, there were countless guests from around the Kansas City community. I had the opportunity to sit with executives from UMB Bank, faculty and staff members, and two other students which proved for great conversation throughout the meal. Dan Rather was yet again, very personable- taking a selfie with the student (a close peer) who introduced him and sharing stories about his marriage. It was such an opportunity to see him speak to such a large, influential audience, and I truly enjoyed the opportunity to attend this event. I only hope Rockhurst continues to provide these types of opportunities for students in the years to come!<br />

This event was held at the new Bloch School of Management Building, and connected students or recent graduates with professionals already in an international career, along with members of the International Trade Council. This organization allows professionals and students to attend events and gatherings focused around the international hub of Kansas City. For this event, it was focused around why, when, and how to begin your global career. They brought in many influential people in this process from the university end including deans, recruitment personnel, and a study abroad coordinator. Additionally, there were several speakers who are already very active in a career around the world, including a man who has been to 35 countries, all for business, to a woman who talks to people around the world daily from her office here in the Midwest. Each spoke about the pros and cons of traveling for work, (since that's the dream of many college graduates looking at an international career), in addition to the overall fascinating scenarios that being involved internationally poses. <br />
<br />
With lunch and networking time following the event, students got a chance to mingle with the professionals, to both make contact for future opportunity and to simply ask for advice. I know that I really enjoyed a chance to get to hear exactly what a usual position in this area includes- its interesting how so many positions now include work overseas, but all in a different way. Additionally, I learned a lot from speaking with one of the professionals about different opportunities for the future. Her position was of particular interest to me, and by just talking through my interests and skills with her, it helped me feel more confident that something will be out there for me when the time comes. Until then, I will just keep attending events like this!<br />

I choose to go back home for a few days and then spent a few days back in Kansas City for events going on. I quite enjoyed some sleeping in, a chance to get my car taken care of, and lots of homework and television with my parents for company. There are definitely some major advantages to doing homework at home (dad helping me and mom keeping me company), and the laziness felt well-deserved. For the weekend, I got to enjoy the celebration of a wedding in Kansas City, with a very pretty ceremony in Mission and a beautiful reception in the Westbottoms area. Getting to take people to restaurants that I've recommended is always fun too :) <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Several students went on a trip organized through Rockhurst to Moore, Oklahoma. They were bused down to the site and then spent the days assisting in ongoing construction projects through Habitat for Humanity. Similar to regular Winter and Spring Break trips, they spent the night at a local high school and participated in prayer and reflection throughout the trip. These many opportunities for service trips are a great way for students to get involved and give back to many different communities and groups of people. </div>

I know that most students by this point in time are MORE than ready for a break. A chance to go home and relax for a few days to power up for the second half of the semester. And this year is NO exception! Luckily for me I don't have any midterms to worry about like most students. I had all of my tests together within two weeks and I'll have the same rotation here in another few weeks. <br />
<br />
Today during class though, we got to have a discussion about the current economic situation relating to the furloughed workers, the budget deal, and the federal debt ceiling. This type of discussion in class was very relevant to what is going on in the world around us and just as, if not more, applicable than what we would have learned during class. Other Rockhurst classes that I am working with have had a service-learning concept which involves a service project that the students must participate in and then do a presentation or a paper about the project, relating it to classroom lessons. Between all of the classes we have at Rockhurst, the applicable real-world learning concepts that we are given are more valuable than most classroom learning you are afforded at other universities. <br />
<br />
Hope this didn't come across as too "salesy" because that definitely wasn't my intent- just something I've noticed especially most recently! Last night, what would have generally been a normal Tuesday night, was made more interesting by a lecture by Israel's ambassador to Vatican City, Zion Evrony, Ph.D., here at Rockhurst. I had seen information about it online, so decided to stop by in the hope to add to the audience that I guessed would be fairly small. However, I was pleasantly surprised to arrive to a very full audience at the Convocation Center! <br />

After an introduction by Craig Prentiss, a professor at Rockhurst and a member of the Jewish Community Relations Bureau, he began his speech with surprising humor for a diplomat! He spent time as the Ambassador to Ireland, and then went into his position where he his now. The Ambassador reminded everyone that the Holy See has separate embassies from Italy, even with the small size and close proximity to the larger country. The most interesting part of his speech (to me) was his message about the interfaith dialogue that takes place in his position. One quote that I particularly liked was that "diplomatic relations (are) used to ease religious tensions".<br />

The questions ranged from subjects including the wall built in the Cremison Valley to tensions in Iran. While I felt that some of the questions were not directed toward the correct place, the Ambassador handled each with care. (He mentioned he hadn't addressed an American audience in many, many years). Overall, it was a phenomenal event that was put on, that was very educational for all of the students who choose to go, in addition to the countless community members who also were in attendance. I even met a very kind couple, around the age of my grandparents, who I sat next to during the presentation, and we had a wonderful conversation following the event. It is always a great opportunity to meet community members, especially since at college, sometimes it feels like you only ever meet other college students! <br />
<br />
But overall, the event went very well, and I am proud to say that I was able to attend yet another great lecture before graduating!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08484384862373953040noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2941835301808276751.post-70732525319409880702013-10-03T18:24:00.002-07:002013-10-03T18:24:18.637-07:00MealsThese past few days, organizations have sponsored two very successful gatherings for "mealtimes". But I will share more here. Yesterday evening, Student Senate sponsored a picnic dinner that allowed any students or faculty to head out to the quad and enjoy their meal outside on the quad alongside other students, with live music and free cookies provided by Sodexo. A lot of students took advantage of the chance to get out in the beautiful weather Wednesday evening and socialize together! This was the first time Student Senate put together the event, and I would say it was a success! We are looking forward to hosting this a few more times before it gets too cold this fall (for those on campus who are interested)<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

The second event was lunch today, sponsored by the Helzberg School, which invited the faculty of the Helzberg Business School to eat lunch with all students enrolled in the Freshmen in Business Seminar (all freshmen interested in a business major). Although we experienced a downpour which delayed some of the professors from arriving at the beginning of the class time, several professors and staff were able to chat with the freshmen and get to meet them (many for the first time). I think the connections that were made along the way will be helpful just as they are beginning their freshmen year! </div>

I have always found these incredibly interesting, even though I've felt it to be a bit overkill this week, but I'm ok with that. So I thought I'd share a little bit about some of these tests. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1) <a href="http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/jtypes2.asp" target="_blank">Myers-Briggs Type Indicator</a></div>
<div>
-Ok, so this is not one that we have done in class, but it is one of my favorite. This test asks you a series of about 60 questions- some of which seem repetitive, but they are all yes or no, so it makes it go by very quickly. Your results of this test come out as 4 letters which each stand for something. The "choices" of letters include: a) Extraversion vs Introversion (E/I) b) Sensing vs Intuition (S/N) c) Thinking vs Feeling (T/F) and d) Judging vs Perception (J/P) My result for this test is ENTJ (Although when I took it in High School I got INTJ) Because many people have had access to this test and have evaluated it, there are a lot of sites which evaluate how your personality result will relate to other personality results, which to me, is the most interesting part of it. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
2) Social Styles (Merrill & Reed)</div>
<div>
-If I remember right, this test asks you to assign a rating/preference to particular tasks and skills under certain situations and will then assign which "Social Style" you are most similar to. The choices are Driver, Expressive, Analytical, and Amiable. My result was as a Driver- which means I'm more likely to take action on a given task than be concerned about the human element. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3) Strength Deployment Inventory (Porter)</div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj10zjNZzoN488bQNsovUHyYBpI5i0dq9hTzCZBpqaz9LARewG3EqQ3A_XYwboRYqXok6CP3t_ZqQ0hV0fCFEqs9lhSGUx1Re6aW6OP3Hg_XS3lUNJX86lUKDA0mfnAMJZwDxXc8PdxOqs/s1600/photo+(12).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj10zjNZzoN488bQNsovUHyYBpI5i0dq9hTzCZBpqaz9LARewG3EqQ3A_XYwboRYqXok6CP3t_ZqQ0hV0fCFEqs9lhSGUx1Re6aW6OP3Hg_XS3lUNJX86lUKDA0mfnAMJZwDxXc8PdxOqs/s320/photo+(12).JPG" width="240" /></a> -The Strength Deployment Inventory begins by having you consider 2 situations- one time when a situation is going well, and another time when a situation is going badly. It asks you specific questions about how likely you are to react in each of these situations which you respond to with a points value- 10 points that you divide between the different situations and you add up the point value at the bottom of a column. The numbers on each column allow you to graph your "motivational" score on a triangle graph divided between 3 colors (which you can be a combination of). For instance, mine came out as Red-Green meaning Judicious- Competing. A second score shows how you are more likely to react under stress. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Overall, these tests serve different purposes, and help make you more self-aware as you are working with others, which is useful in many different situations. If you get a chance to take one of these assessments in your organization or classes, don't ignore the results! They're useful across many parts of your life! </div>

Delta Sigma Pi, the business fraternity that I am involved in, signed up for times to allow us to help out. So Wednesday evening, a few of us showed up and were put to (work) volunteering! Our job for the day was to sort out pallets full of sliced bread, hot dog and hamburger buns, bagels, and all assortment of bread-type products. At other times I have sorted vegetables in huge bins, and friends have helped put together boxes for donations, among many other tasks. We always end up having a lot of fun volunteering, because we get a chance to visit with whoever you are working with, and often times, getting to know someone new- who you wouldn't have talked to before! Something about Harvester's is that they are the only food bank in the area. At their warehouse-style location, businesses, grocery stores, churches, and individuals donate food which is then sorted into all different categories to then be distributed to other local nonprofit agencies and organizations. (which according to their <a href="http://www.harvesters.org/WhoWeAre/Index.asp?x=020|010&~=" target="_blank">website</a>, is over 620) Their work requires countless volunteers who come in daily to assist with sorting the donated food. We actually worked with a group of women from an area company (I didn't catch where at) who actually come in weekly to assist in this sorting. I also know that Rockhurst will often bring in large groups whether it is from different organizations, for our Finucane Service Project, or the Service Project for Family and Alumni weekend, both Rockhurst and Harvesters benefits from this relationship.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So if you ever get the chance, I would definitely recommend giving back to your community with an organization such as Harvesters!<br /><div>
